My therapist will never get me.
Though I am not you, and I don’t have the same experiences as you, I see you, I hear you, and I am with you.
It's common to fear that your therapist won't be able to understand you or relate to your experiences-- and it's true, it's not always possible to fully understand all that encompasses you. How could another person expect to comprehend all of the complex life experiences that you have endured? It would seem a little audacious to think one could!
However, this doesn't change the fact that there is restorative power in the caring, connection, and skill provided during the course of therapy. Therein lies a great thing-- you will have someone working to understand you, and when they need a little help, they will ask the important and meaningful questions. You will encounter someone open to accepting their own limitations and someone persistent enough to continue to showing up for you!
Perhaps, we can take comfort in the fact that perfect isn't a necessary condition for growth, change, healing, trust, or safety. Perfect isn't a value, it's a stagnant expectation that serves to limit our trust in all that we have accomplished so far, or will accomplish in the future. Don't let perfection keep you from trying something new, whether that be seeking therapy or another small step.
